EDUCATION:
The primary goal for the Education Department at the Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP) is to provide a basic level of education that will enable inmates to successfully engage with the world around them.
WSP offers a General Education Development (GED) program to all offenders who have not earned their high school diploma or GED. Classes are offered to provide an opportunity for adults who have not graduated from high school to earn a high school level educational diploma/certificate. Those inmates with special learning issues have the benefit of trained teachers in both Special Education and English Language Learning.
Post-secondary education is limited in availability at WSP. Several colleges and universities may be accessed through paper correspondence courses. There are also other options for post-secondary training while at WSP.
Pre-Release
WSP provides releasing inmates with formal instruction in multiple areas to aid their transition back into society and the community as law-abiding citizens. During their time of incarceration, the world moved on. Thus, WSP teaches eight modules entitled Life Skills, Job Search Skills, Employability and Sustainability, Financial Management, Transitional Issues, Social Services, Health Issues and Technology. All are designed to aid in the transition from prison life to community life and all utilize materials developed in Wyoming and resourced from across the country.
